LONG BEACH, Calif. - Defending national champion Stanford (1-0) topped Long Beach State (0-1) by a score of 25-19, 25-21, 25-13 on Friday afternoon at Walter Pyramid. The No. 2 ranked Cardinal won its season opener on the 10-year anniversary of Stanford"s last visit to Long Beach. After leading the nation in blocking a season ago, the visitors had 12.0 blocks and held the Beach to -.010 hitting.

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Beach dropped to 1-2 on the season with a four-set loss against the visiting Iowa Hawkeyes (2-1) on Saturday night at Walter Pyramid. The teams split the first two sets, but Iowa pulled away after intermission for a 25-23, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21 victory. The Beach evened things up in set two by holding Iowa to a match-low .128 hitting. It was a very even second game with an impressive 20 ties and seven lead changes. Behind nine Hawkeye hitting errors and four kills from freshman Monika Simkova in the set, LBSU was able to even the match going into the locker room. A dump from Alexis Patterson, a solo block from Xue and a Simkova kill off the block gave the Beach the final three points of the set.

Iowa came out strong in the third, hitting .375 in the set while recording 18 digs as a team. Kruidhof did deliver five big kills in the set, but LBSU couldn"t keep pace. OREM, Utah - Long Beach State (1-5) dropped its final match of the Wolverine Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Lockhart Arena, suffering a 25-21, 12-25, 27-25, 25-18 loss against hosts Utah Valley (3-4). Megan Kruidhof was again a bright spot for the Beach, setting a new career high in kills for the second straight day. The junior had a match-high 19 kills to go with 11 digs, and was named to the All-Tournament Team following the match.

The Beach had a season-best 11.5 blocks on Saturday, led by Emma Kirst"s seven. YiZhi Xue had six blocks to go with 11 kills and a .588 attack percentage. Hailey Harward had a season-high 22 digs to lead the team and Kirst chipped in a season-high 17 digs as well. Alexis Patterson recorded her first double-double at the Beach with 32 assists and 11 digs.

LBSU got off to a slow start in set one, falling behind 5-0 before using a timeout. UVU eventually led 11-3 and never trailed in the set as they cruised to a 1-0 lead. Monika Simkova had five kills in the first set alone, but LBSU hit just .054 as a team. The Beach did make things interesting late by pulling within three at 24-21, and that momentum carried over into the second game.

Long Beach State started and ended the set well, opening with a 4-0 spurt and closing on an 8-1 run. The Beach hit .500 in set two, led by six kills on nine error-free swings from Kruidhof. Long Beach also had five blocks and a sideout percentage of 92 in what was one of the most complete sets the team has played all year.

Unfortunately, the momentum did not carry over after intermission as Utah Valley edged out a competitive set three, which included 11 ties and four lead changes. Kruidhof had seven kills in the third set, but LBSU was undone by six costly service errors. UVU led 23-20 late in the frame, but after a timeout Long Beach State battled back to make it 24-all on a successful dump from Mina Andjelkovic on Utah Valley"s first set point. A Simkova kill gave Long Beach a chance at set point, but a service error started a decisive 3-0 run for the Wolverines, giving them a 2-1 edge in the match.

Things looked promising in set four as the Beach held an 11-9 lead, but Utah Valley went on a 6-0 run and never trailed the rest of the afternoon. The Beach got to within 20-17 but the host Wolverines closed on a 5-1 run to end the match.

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Playing its second match of the day, Long Beach State (3-10) got off to a slow start against visiting Montana State (4-5) on Saturday night, but the Beach picked things up after intermission and dominated the rest of the match in a 22-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-14, 15-5 win.

After hitting .154 and .100 in the first two sets, respectively, the Beach hit a blistering .448 in set three and continued their offensive efficiency by hitting .400 and .353 in the final two sets to close out another win at Walter Pyramid. The visiting Bobcats hit .344 in the opening frame, but after taking their 2-0 lead they never hit better than .107 over the final three games.

Freshman Radi Marinova was a balanced, steady presence for the Beach, posting eight kills on .368 hitting with career-highs in digs (14) and blocks (6). Megan Kruidhof led the way with 16 kills and hit a team-best .371 on the outside. Monika Simkova was also in double-figures with 11 kills. Alexis Patterson had 32 assists, eight digs, and five blocks including two solo roofs. Hailey Harward had 14 digs, six assists and three aces on the night.

Simkova had four kills in the first set along, but the Beach couldn"t find its collective rhythm and MSU eventually pulled out the win. Consecutive Harward aces were part of a late 4-0 run to make it 23-22 Montana State, but the visitors took the final two points to take the 1-0 lead. The Bobcats then started set two on an 8-2 run and never relinquished the lead, heading to the locker room in control of the match.

But after the 10-minute break, Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer"s team looked like a whole different group on the floor, immediately turning the tide of the match. Kruidhof had four kills on six swings in set three, and Simkova chipped in five kills and an ace. The Beach pulled away with a 7-2 run to close the set and get back in the match.

Set four was more of the same, as LBSU got out to a 17-9 edge and never looked back, finishing with a flurry by taking six of the final seven points. The Beach attack was balanced and relentless in sets three and four, as Marinova, Kruidhof, Kjersti Norveel, and YiZhi Xue combined for 22 kills on 39 swings without a single hitting error. That"s good for a .564 hitting percentage from the quartet.

The Beach stayed hot in the fifth set, leading 8-3 at the switch. Kruidhof seemed to get stronger as the match wore on, collecting five kills in the fifth including the match-winner at the tail end of a 4-0 LBSU run.

Long Beach State will look to turn Saturday"s victories into a winning streak as Big West play gets underway next week. The Beach visit UC Riverside (8-4) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the conference opener for both teams. The match will be broadcast live online via ESPN3.

DAVIS, Calif. - Long Beach State tried to battle out of an 0-2 hole on Saturday night at The Pavilion, but host UC Davis was able to pull out a 25-13, 25-17, 25-22, 25-20 victory in Big West action. LBSU falls to 5-14 on the season and 2-4 in conference matches while UC Davis improves to 9-9, going 1-4 in Big West play. This is the first time UC Davis has defeated Long Beach State in women"s volleyball as the Aggies are now 1-25 against the Beach.

Junior Megan Kruidhof led Long Beach State with 14 kills on the night while adding four blocks. Redshirt junior Emma Kirst had her best match of her Long Beach State career, collecting eight kills on .500 hitting, filling the stat sheet with seven digs and six blocks. Freshman Mina Andjelkovic came off the bench to lead LBSU with 30 assists and Hailey Harward had a team-high 13 digs along with Long Beach"s only ace of the night.

LBSU got off to a slow start hitting in the negative in the first set, but the block was solid early for the Beach. Kirst had four blocks in the opening frame and LBSU had 5.0 blocks as a team. Kruidhof had four of LBSU"s five kills in that opening set, but Davis was in command on their home court.

Kirst had three kills on three swings in the second set to try to help Long Beach even things up, but an early 7-2 lead for UC Davis was too much to overcome. A 3-0 Beach run made it 20-17 UC Davis and caused the Aggies to use a timeout, but the hosts scored five straight to close out the set and lead 2-0.

For the second straight match, Long Beach State responded after intermission to win set three, as Kruidhof chipped in four more kills and Monika Simkova added three in the third. The Beach benefitted from 10 Aggies hitting errors in set three, while on the other side LBSU committed just two errors. The set was tied at 21-21, but a key 3-0 run put Long Beach on the doorstep. Eventually it was a double block by Andjelkovic and Kirst that ended the set in LBSU"s favor.

UC Davis raced out to a 6-1 lead in set four, one that Long Beach would eventually neutralize. LBSU pulled within two at 15-13 as Harward served a 4-0 run, capped with an ace, then the Beach got things level at 19-all. The Aggies answered with a 3-0 run and scored six of the next seven points to secure the win.

Long Beach State returns home to Walter Pyramid to host Hawai"i on Friday night at 7 p.m. The match will be shown live on ESPNU.

LBSU got off to a strong start in set one, leading 9-3 on consecutive aces from libero Rachel Nieto, who also added 12 digs in the match. UCSB battled back to take the lead at 18-17 on the strength of a 5-0 run, and it was an even set to the finish. Unfortunately for the Beach, UCSB standout Lindsey Ruddins took over late, recording a kill and consecutive solo blocks to finish off the set with a 3-0 Gauchos run. Kruidhof had five kills and five digs in the first frame, but LBSU couldn"t quite finish it off.

In set two, the Beach got the match level by holding UCSB to -.054 hitting. LBSU had four blocks in the set and Harward heated up with six kills. The key stretch was a 6-0 run that turned a 15-14 lead into a 21-14 advantage for the Beach. The run was served by Radi Marinova, who was able to return to action after missing a few weeks with injury. A Kruidhof kill down the line ended the set and evened the match, 1-1.

Set three was tough from the outset as the Gauchos raced out to a 5-1 lead. LBSU was able to rally and tie the match at 9-9, but eventually faded in the late stages. It certainly didn"t help when sophomore YiZhi Xue was injured during set three and forced to leave the match. The Beach would surrender an 8-0 run to the Gauchos turning a close set (15-14) into a comfortable 25-16 win for Santa Barbara.

It looked as if the Gauchos were headed for a comfortable win in the fourth, but a resilient Beach squad didn"t go quietly. UCSB led 21-14 in the fourth, but LBSU battled back by winning nine of the next 11 points to tie the set at 23-all. Kirst and Monika Simkova had back-to-back roofs of Ruddins to pull the Beach within one and force a Gauchos timeout, then Kruidhof got things tied with a kill. The Beach would survive a pair of match points before Ruddins eventually won the match by beating a triple block from the back row for her 27th kill.

LBSU has an even tougher road test in store on Saturday, facing No. 23 Cal Poly on the road. The first-place Mustangs are now 8-0 in Big West play coming off a sweep of CSUN on Friday. First serve between Cal Poly and Long Beach State is set for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in San Luis Obispo.
